Part One

Side Story: A Day in the Life of G-Class NPC Mont

Ah, yes. I'm Mont, a G-Class NPC. Fifty years old.

My occupation is Magic-Wire Technician. Hooking up the magic lines that deliver energy to your households, day in and day out — that's my job.

This is my wife, Aide. Cute, isn't she?

… Hahaha. I know. Most folks wouldn't call Aide cute.

Her eyes are small, she's got buck teeth, her jaw juts out.

But to me she's the cutest woman in the world. My wife.

This house? Four-and-a-half tatami, one room, with a kitchen, toilet, and bath.

Not bad, right? As a home owned by a G-Class NPC, it's quite respectable.

A G-Class NPC's worth, you see, comes down to this.

Wife, house, work. How many of those three you've got decides it.

If you have all three, well, among G-Class NPCs you can hold your head up plenty high.

Income is about 30G a month for the couple. Since we own the house, there's no rent. We save a little at a time.

I have no complaints. I'd say I'm one of the lucky ones.

The reason I succeeded as a G-Class NPC, plainly, was knowing my limits.

My school grades were 12th. Out of 14 students. Nearly the bottom.

You'd be surprised how many people in that range still cling to groundless confidence.

That they'll be blessed with luck, land an amazing Garumon, play a great role.

You know how the current world number 1, Satoru, supposedly had terrible grades in school?

That gets people with middling grades thinking the wrong things.

There's no such possibility. People who play great roles like that generally had good grades in school too.

Satoru's "poor student" story is probably a lie, right?

Look at someone's school grades and you can roughly tell where they're headed.

In a class of 10…

1st place… if things go well, maybe C-Class or higher. Well, normally D or E at best.

2nd to 3rd… these might reach D. But usually E, F if unlucky.

4th to 6th… these are E or F. Could even end up at G around here, if things go badly.

7th to 8th… this range. F at best, normally G.

9th to 10th… these are G at best. Fight in earnest and they're H-Class slave candidates.

People with bad school grades peak the moment they graduate. After that, it's all downhill.

So there are two things you should do.

At graduation, pick two Garumon with as high a value as possible. R-Class is best.

Then from N-Class Garumon — value around 100 — pick the cutest one you'd want to marry.

That's it.

If only HN-Class came around on your turn, well, nothing you can do about that.

Sell an R-Class Garumon and you get about 700 to 1000G.

And the highest-value HN-Class Garumon sells for about 200 to 400G.

See, just selling those two has a solid chance of hitting 1000G.

Well, if you're unlucky it falls short. In my case it sold for 1030G.

A close call.

A Master can become an NPC by paying 500G to leave G-Class.

Converting a value-100 N-Class Garumon into an NPC also costs 500G.

So, if you're lucky and sell three HN-Class — or with average luck, selling an HN-Class and an R-Class — that alone is enough to get one Garumon as a wife and retire.

After that, even without money, you save up little by little and can eventually reach a home of your own.

Well, it took us 30 years.

Of course, selling one R-Class plus two HN-Class outright is more reliable.

But then you've got no room to pick the N-Class you'll marry.

You're stuck with the gacha or buying one of the cheap Garumon lined up at the shop.

The gacha is pure luck, and if you're lucky it's fine… but in most cases the Garumon you pull are at a pretty dire level.

Best to avoid.

The shop lets you choose by appearance, but cheap ones are cheap for a reason… and you can't pick personality.

Sure, a Master can give orders to a Garumon. But you can't command her feelings.

Endlessly ordering an unmotivated Garumon around, forcing her to obey — nobody can put up with that.

Dealing with a Garumon who's actively sabotaging you, sometimes it's faster to just do it yourself — cases where the Master ends up working like a slave aren't rare.

A wife like that, you're better off without.

She's a Garumon you'll spend your whole life with. So you want to choose carefully.

And the chance to choose like that only comes during your school years, when you spend long stretches of time together.

Once N-Class value nears 300, the cost of converting to NPC suddenly jumps to 4500G — completely over budget.

Below value 100 is even cheaper, but the appearance is too brutal.

So value 100 is the sweet spot. You can't go over it either, so it's tricky…

Aide is exactly value 100, and her appearance is, well, this — but she had no twisted edge to her, an exceedingly good girl.

Meeting Aide in school was a stroke of luck.

After that, give up quickly. Riding your own Garumon-Battle talent up the rankings to the top… obviously impossible.

You just have to accept that obvious fact, properly.

I succeeded because I did what needed doing.

… In my school years, my grades were poor and I was always being laughed at. Third from the bottom, after all.

But at class reunions now, I'm something like third from the top.

The 1st-place Ruben's C-Class is impressive, as you'd expect. He was in a different class from us even back in school.

He monopolized the class's two SR-Class and the HR-Class super-beauties and climbed leisurely upward.

People like him are a different species from us.

The 2nd-place Zapan's E-Class is, well, about right for him.

Even E-Class is something. A great success.

But the 3rd-place Gura has reportedly fallen to H-Class slave status now.

Can't help but laugh.

In school days he strutted around — "I'm beneath Ruben and Zapan now, but once it counts it'll be different." And then when the lid came off… haha.

The 4th and below… 4th-place Dyne, 5th-place Jido, 6th-place Gif still seem to be hanging on at G-Class. The 7th-11th crew are safely G-Class NPC. "Graduated," you could say. But they're the common type — wife-less Masters. Most G-Class NPCs are wife-less.

… Of course, the most successful G-Class NPCs have houses, three wives, that sort of thing.

I'm not saying I don't envy them… but one wife is plenty.

13th and 14th are out of contact, location unknown. Probably H-Class, as their ranking suggested.

Even those guys, with no sense at all, had a chance to live like me if they'd let go of their first three HN-Class.

Dreaming despite being worse than me… truly comical.

My daily life?

Yes, even so, I'm a Magic-Wire Technician. The Garumon do the fine work, but only we Magic-Wire Technicians can issue the instructions.

My monthly income comes to 40G. On the high end among G-Class NPCs.

The average income for a G-Class Master is 20G — that's the average for Masters who hold qualifications and work.

For all G-Class NPCs overall, the average is around 10G. I'm definitely in the top 10-20%.

I gave up on becoming a Master from the start and shifted toward earning a qualification.

Aide is the same kind of Technician. My wife's income is 30G. So 70G for the couple. About on par with a modest F-Class NPC.

Well, taxes get taken from that, but G-Class NPC taxes aren't as steep as G-Class Master taxes… 45%, but it can't be helped.

We benefit from the System too.

After that, monthly town association fees, management fees, and various odds and ends take 10G…

So the remaining 30G is my monthly disposable income. Future savings matter too, but… well, I can spend a decent bit on leisure.

No inconvenience in daily life.

I'd like a new, spacious house too, but with good houses going for 3000G or so, I really can't reach. This house was 500G. Even that was rough. Lucky to get it at a steal.

Well, if a couple gets along, this cramped house is a fun home. If a child were born, it'd be tight, I suppose…

How do ordinary G-Class NPCs — the ones not as well-off as me — get by?

Yes, I get it. Most of my old classmates are like that, after all.

When a Master becomes an NPC, they have to pick up a skill and work too.

Whether you can land a good job here determines the rest of your life.

The skills to land a job and the skills demanded of a Master aren't the same.

You can't beat a Garumon in physical strength, so intelligence and knowledge become necessary.

… Most of them, well, can't get into very good jobs.

Worst case, they can only do the same work as H-Class. Sperm farms, making magic-supply medicine.

G-Class NPCs have 5 HP, so they can produce more volume than H-Class slaves. Working daily without rest, they apparently earn about 15G a month.

Low-quality jobs pay around 5G a month, so combining both they can scrape together about 20G.

From there 9G is taxes; management fees and the rest might be cheaper than ours, around 3G. Rent and food at about 5G… that leaves about 3G monthly earnings, by my count.

If they used that to better themselves and land a job, that'd be fine, but…

Most of them spend it all on women.

If they had 3G a session they could hit a decent brothel with HN-Class, but penniless as they are, that's not in the cards.

It's the cheap brothels with only N-Class… or buying streetwalkers who can't even get into the brothels.

Those women take customers for about 30-50 silus per session.

Garumon I wouldn't want to do even if they paid me.

When I think that the same act I do with Aide for free every day, those guys are paying 1G a session to an even uglier Garumon than Aide for… honestly, the smug satisfaction makes me laugh.

Every time they ejaculate, there goes 1G, there goes 1G.

In school they mocked my Aide, but now they glare at her with maddeningly envious eyes — feels truly good.

I could go to a brothel too, if I wanted. But I want to get Aide pregnant, so I can't waste my semen.

We had one child about 10 years back.

Ah, having a child was truly wonderful! So cute… Since the child left our care after 6 years, I want to make another.

I'm still active, I should give it one more shot.

A wife-less guy can't even consider children! Ahaha…!

… That said, the method I used to become an NPC isn't available anymore. Apparently for the first year after debuting at G-Class, you can't become an NPC.

Now you either win 10 straight and rise to F-Class… or somehow weather that one year.

Selling out before the rules changed — I was lucky.

… You ask if there are higher-class Garumon out there in the world? Ah, of course, I know that.

I once held an R-Class Garumon myself, after all.

I know how cute an R-Class Garumon can be.

Above that, it's apparently like a heavenly goddess.

A classmate of mine had an SR-Class Garumon. Aaah, she was beautiful.

Up close she smelled wonderful… To think I could've studied in the same building as such a beautiful Garumon — looking back, it's like a dream.

… But it's fine. That's a story from a different dimension.

A dream from when I was young. That's enough.

Even now, if you turn on the TV, even people like us can see unbelievably beautiful Garumon.

But honestly, I'd never dream of obtaining one.

Garumon that special — they're the kind of thing that special Masters, different from us, obtain.

A whole different dimension.

Gold and gems, well, I know they exist in this world, but of course they're not within our reach.

And SSR-Class, UR-Class Garumon are far more valuable than those.

Well, that's enough, isn't it? Hehe, of course, today too I'll be enjoying my wife.

Aaah, I'm a happy man!
